One week to go!

Soo... the big day is finally approaching! One week from now i'll be flying over the Atlantic and on my way to Philly (where i have an overnight layover). And one day later at exactly this time (11.38 local time!) i'll be landing at Cyril E. King airport in Saint Thomas. Saint John, where Maho Bay is, doesn't have an airport (it's so tiny that you can walk all the way across the island and back in about three hours!). So after a 38 hour mini odyssey, the last part of the trip will be on a ferry, which i'm very excited about - I think it might make me feel a little bit like i'm back home..I have to admit i've been feeling kinda homesick these past couple of days. I keep listening to this and missing everyone.

Though I've been feeling quite sad about not going to Greece for the summer (for the first time in my life! it feels so strange), i'm also unbelievably excited about this new experience and  i've basically been reading everything that I could get my hands and eyes on about the Caribbean in general, and the Virgin Islands in particular... The place has a fascinating past, full of explorers and pirates (it's apparently were Edward Teach aka Blackbeard used to hang out - you can even visit his castle!), but it also seems to have a fascinating present, full of activities like snorkeling (M., who's already been there a week, got to swim with sea turtles and dolphins!), hiking, and even some climbing (woohoo!). It also seems that one very popular outdoor activity over there is drinking rum cocktails at beach bars (such as Bomba's shack in Tortola, with it's apparently legendary full moon parties), which i'll be more than happy to try as well ;-) .

As for the preparations: i think i now have everything i need... I was very happy to find out that no visa is required to enter the US Virgin Islands - all you need is the Visa Waiver, which you can get online. It's quick (takes no more that 5 mins), cheap (14$), and efficient (i've already used it for my last trip to the US and it's valid for two years). No shots are required (except the ones i'll be having on the beach, hehehe) (i'm such a geek), so now that everything has been booked it looks like we're good to go! I can't wait.... I am a little bit apprehensive about the trip but i'm sure it'll be worth it, and completely forgotten as soon as i step foot on Caribbean soil :-)

So there you go.... i think the next update will be from the tropics (oh and before i forget: there's a 6hr time difference with central Europe and a 7hr one with Greece). I promise to be back with pictures!
