Copenhagen

Well, i've been back home (so to speak) for a couple of weeks now and i'm already itching to be on the road again. But since there are, sadly, no big travel plans in the very near future, i've decided to re-live past wanderings by sharing them with you...

I hope i'll be able to tackle last year's big US west coast road trip at some point (after i've got the hang of this blogging thing), but i think i'll start with something smaller - so how about a small tour of Copenhagen, with the help of M.'s lovely pictures?

After a very bumpy start, Copenhagen turned out to be a perfect weekend escape, a stylish, vintage-loving, bike-friendly, fun little town with lots of things to do and a rather cool, hipstery vibe about it. Everything and everyone was somehow so stylish, from the bars to the restaurants to the unbelievably good looking boys and girls, to the cool bikes, to the awesome design shops - it sort of feels like walking around inside a design magazine where everything is just simply styled to perfection. Seriously

Here's a little taste:

strange but fun: the Tivoli gardens (my favourite picture, thanks to m.!)
funky architecture

nice street cafés
Nyhavn, Copenhagen tourist center (quite nice though)
One of the five lakes that mark the city center - there seems to be an awful amount of jogging around them....
I refused to stand in line to take a picture with the little mermaid,
but i couldn't resist snapping one of the crowds looking adoringly at that melancholy little figure
these strange contraptions where everywhere (well, almost)

Notice the lovely summer sky in the pictures? Believe it or not, these were snapped in midsummer (and don't think it was warm either). The lovely north lived up to its reputation and rewarded us for our choice of destination by heavy rains and grey skies (we camped at Charlottenlund Fort, and our tent almost got carried away by the rain.. it did make for a suspenseful evening, let me tell you!)

Anyway - Copehagen made up for the horrid weather by the existence of (possibly literally! well maybe not, but you get my point) MILLIONS of cool cafés, bars, restaurants, and other such establishments, fit to accommodate all budgets and tastes (though it seems to cater mainly to a young-ish, deadly stylish, well-off, design-friendly, hipster-y kind of crowd - but who doesn't, nowadays). The place is crawling with them (both the cafés and the hipsters) - and though i was only there for a weekend, here are some of my favourites:

Mother probably takes the cake - it's a stylish (i know, i know, that's probably the most times i've used this word in a text ever, but am i to blame if everything up there is so, well, stylish??) italian/pizza place in Kødbyen (= "meat city"), Copenhagen's up and coming meatpacking district - if you're lucky, you might catch the very cool flea market inside the meat market courtyard! Around there is also the gorgeous café Mandela (also with a nice flea market in the inner courtyard, if you're lucky..)

Another fun address: the famous laundromat café, where you can grab a drink, read, chill out and/or socialize while waiting for your laundry to be done (such a cool idea!). It's funky, colourful, and full of books. Quite nice.

Of course if you want to really splurge (and if you manage to get a table), you can try the world-famous noma, voted best restaurant in the world (!!! quite a claim) the past couple of years. We didn't even try - though i would be curious to see what the best restaurant in the world tastes like (NOTE: i take it back since i just discovered their highly praised dessert: blueberries and ants, yes, you heard me, live ants, so i think i'll pass).

Other fun things to do in Copenhagen:

Visit Tivoli Gardens, a strange mixture of a quaint, oriental-style garden (pagodas, red lanterns, the whole thing) and a high-speed, breathtaking amusement park with lots of adult-friendly, and pretty damn scary, rides (my first drop tower, yey!) (also, the very very cool Star Flyer, the world's tallest carousel - try spinning aroung in the air 80m above ground!!! the view is stunning but i almost peed in my pants...).

Eat a hot dog!! I was intrigued to hear that this is where the hot dog comes from  - even though i'm not a big fan i was determined to try it, and try it i did (quite a few times, which i'm afraid explains why i don't have any more restaurant suggestions!). To be honest, i don't think i've ever had a hot dog anywhere else in my life, so i don't really have anything to compare it with, but i can tell you these Pølsevogn (=sausage wagon! don't ask me how you pronounce that though) that you find on every street corner usually make a mean one (if you wanna go for it, i guess you should probably try and track down the organic hot dog stand - if you're gonna have a million calories for lunch, might as well make it organic:-) ).

Ride a bike - you haven't brought yours with you? not to worry, the City Bike is here, and it's free!! you can rent these strange, extremely basic, quite uncomfortable but very helpful and kinda cute bikes from all over the city, and return them when you're done with them. Did i mention it's free?

Or, if you're quite (read: very, very, very) athletic, you can run a triathlon! And a proper one, too. We happened to be there for it last August and i still am in complete awe of the (very brave, in my eyes) men and women who take on the iron man challenge (and it was so exciting to watch while we stood by the side of the road eating our hot dogs).

And let's not forget Christiania, the strange commune/self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood, a hippie sort of place if there ever was one...

Did i say that Copenhagen is a perfect weekend getaway? i take it back! A weekend is definitely too short, so i'm just looking forward to going back to explore some more...

Rollercoaster, Tivoli
neat and tidy little houses
Charlottenlund Fort (our campsite!)
the way back
